Sapna Nag is from the village of Tundla in Odisha, India. She and her husband live in a small hut with seven children. Her husband does carpentry work however his limited earnings are not enough to provide for her family needs. Sapna heard about Empowered Poor’s micro-lending program in India and applied for a loan. She was able to purchase a milk producing cow and sell the milk to those living in her community. Over the past year she has built up a good clientele and earning enough money to meet the families’ daily needs. After one year she was able to breed the cow and a new calf was born to her. Her hope is to increase the number in her herd so that she can sell milk to more people in her community. She also purchased a few hens and a goat with her earnings which has increased the family’s income substantially.
Now she is also able to start saving some money for their future. They are planning to improve their mud home by adding concrete walls and a tin roof. Sapna and her family are very happy and have been an encouragement to others in the community. She is another example of how Empowered Poor is changing the future of those in need…one person…one family…one community at a time.
